The graduation ceremonies always have a lot of speeches. This year, the headmaster of Cheshire Academy invited an former student of this old school for the graduation speech—Jeff Furman. Who is Jeff Furman? According to the My recording journal website, Jeff Furman is the chairman of the Ben&Jerry ice-cream company since 1980 (Myrecordingjournal.org). He is a successful entrepreneur who established an ice-cream company with his friend. This month, Jeff Furman is going back to Cheshire Academy and tell his stories to all the teenagers in the school.
According to Ben&Jerry’s foundation website, “With a background in biology and a graduate certificate on making ice cream from a Penn State correspondence course, Jerry took charge of the operations side of the business and made the first batches of ice cream.” (Ben&Jerry’s foundation.org) Yes,Jeff Furman was not majored in Economics or Business in college like many of the entrepreneurs. Instead, He was actually a biology guy. According to Jeff’s words on Cheshire Academy homepage, Jeff Furman said he wrote Chemical Engineer on the statement list in his senior year, although he had no idea what that was (cheshireacademy.org). You can see Jeff is a very causal and easygoing person. Unlike other ambitious students who wanted to be big boss or bankers, he lives a pretty relaxing life, and he knows how to follow his heart. He became a bus drive in a private school with Ben after the college, and through that process, the brand of the ice-cream gradually appeared(cheshireacademy.org). When people mention the chairman of some big company, the first idea comes into mind would be business. However, Jeff Furman is not just an ordinary business man who sinks into the ocean of profit and products; he is also a responsible man with passion to others.
The headmaster of Cheshire Academy Mr. Nozell said: ““Jeff’s dedication to corporate social responsibility is part of why I wanted to reach out to him and ask him to come back and speak at Commencement.” (cheshireacademy.org) Jeff Furman puts the social responsibility into everything he did. After he gained the “nutrition” from the society that nurtured him, he started to repay it with the resource he made. According to the website of Ben&Jerry, Jeff established Ben&Jerry’s Foundation in 1985 to fund many social project with their profit. (benjerry.com) Jeff has always been trying to connect his live with the social work. It is exactly because of what a passionate man he is. Search him on the internet, you can feel a kind of contagious power in his smile. It seems like the miniature of his fearlessness towards the difficulties, the hope of life, the great responsibility for the community, and the optimism that attracts people around him.
Now you understand why Mr. Nozell invited him to give a speech on the graduation, right? From this man, the teenagers can see the model of a real good and successful person. After you following your heart and coming to your own satisfaction, just think like Jeff Furman did : “ How do we fully integrate a social mission into everything we do?” (cheshiracademy.org)
